The Testing and Validation Department conducts detailed R&D testing activities on the basis of the philosophy “Designs reliable and robust vehicles” Otokar has created as public reputation.
This Department performs design-supporting studies to identify the superiorities and weaknesses of the designs in order to develop vehicles that will meet customer expectations and have worldwide competitive advantages by converting physical science into numerical essence.
In order to simulate and accelerate the real life equivalent loads, vehicle testing studies are accompanied by modern and hi-tech infrastructures, and thus renders its product development and implementation processes competitive in terms of time and cost.
The Testing and Validation Department operates in compliance with the ISO/IEC 17025 ‘’General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories’’. The data is obtained and evaluated as defined in the international military and commercial standards.
OTOKAR also presents its modern testing infrastructures available to all other industrial and research organisations.
Within such scope, it operates in four main divisions as follows:
In this division; the environmental effects representing the real operating conditions are applied to the vehicle by using dedicated testing laboratories. Thus, the structural and thermal loads that could act on the vehicle during its life can be applied in an accelerated manner. The areas of operation can be listed as durability, fatigue mechanism, vibration, noise, and thermo-aerodynamic systems. On the hydraulic road simulator; reverse transfer matrices of the vehicle suspension systems are calculated to convert the road data into simulation data, and accelerated durability tests of the body/suspension components of the vehicles are performed. Similarly; motion simulations are carried out and the performance of military vehicle fire control systems are tested on the six degrees of freedom Hexapod simulator. In the climatic chamber with dynamometer; humidity-temperature checks and vehicle load simulations are performed to simulate the environmental conditions in different geographic regions of the world, and the heating and cooling systems and subsystem thermal behaviours of the vehicles in different climates are studied.
In this division; the behaviours of the vehicle armours subjected to kinetic energy and high pressures are investigated, and development work is performed to improve their protection levels. Shock dynamics, biomechanics and material mechanics are among its areas of operation. The material, thickness, angle and alignment in the on-vehicle armour solutions are examined at the Otokar terminal ballistic testing laboratory. Besides this, the elastic-plastic deformations and the shock accelerations occurring during mine explosions are recorded by means of high-speed data acquisition systems, sensors and cameras, and reported in a form that they can serve as inputs for the final design. The personnel injuries are investigated by using the HibritIII mine blast test dummy. For the goal of achieving the protection level, energy absorbing seat and floor designs are developed at the Mine simulation drop test stand, which is also supported by TÜBİTAK, the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey.
In this division; work is performed in respect of electromagnetic interference and compatibility. Testing and analysis activities are conducted in order to ensure that the system and subsystem electronics may function without being affected by the electromagnetic environment they are operating, or without affecting other devices and systems operating in the same environment. In such scope, the conducted and radiated immunity and emission tests are carried out in the Otokar Anechoic chamber representing open air testing conditions. EMC analysis are conducted in respect of radar cross-section area optimisation, antenna placement and interaction. EMC tests can be performed in compliance with the international military and commercial testing standards. These include, but not limited to, MIL-STD-461E/F, 2004/104/EC, 2009/64/EC, ECE R10-04 and MIL-STD-464. The Otokar EMI/EMC Test Centre operates in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 ‘’General Requirements for the Competence of Testing Laboratories’’, the scope of which can be accessed via the website of TÜRKAK, the Turkish Accreditation Agency.
In this division; the wheeled and tracked vehicles being developed by the design teams are investigated for their behaviours under dynamic loads in actual operating conditions in water or on land. The vehicle dynamics, mobility, performance of all automotive components such as brake, suspension, steering, and fuel system performance parameters are converted into numerical essence by sensors in terms of physical data such as temperature, pressure, force and torque, comfort, durability, interior noise, and vibration. So that the works required to meet the customer needs are identified and to engineering lead times are reduced.
