Otokar; The Land Defence Systems House of Turkey

Celebrating its 50th anniversary Otokar is the most experienced land systems manufacturer of Turkey, Otokar General Manager Serdar Gorguc said, and continued: "We have been operating in defence industry since 1987, however Otokar is the first manufacturer of armoured vehicles for money transport in 1983 and first tactical vehicle manufacturer of Turkey in 1966. Since the day we made first tactical armoured vehicle export in Turkey, our vehicles are used in 5 continents, in nearly 30 countries by more than 40 users. The feedbacks and the expectations of our users are our guiedelines to enlarge our product portfolio. Today we manufacture armoured vehicles from 4x4 to 8x8 and tracked vehicles; from 3/4 tonnes to 60 tonnes. Our own design vehicles and turret systems carry us to the leadership of land defence systems of Turkey"

Regarding IDEF Mr. Gorguc said: "At IDEF we are exhibiting three new armoured vehicles and three new turret systems. In order to serve our users in different segments of armoured vehicles we designed TULPAR tracked armoured vehicle. I believe new generation tracked armoured vehicle TULPAR will meet the upcoming expectations of modern armed forces. We also display the new model of COBRA family COBRA II at IDEF which has more payload and volume than standard COBRA vehicle. Otokar will continue to present both vehicles for different needs. URAL is another new 4x4 armoured vehicle especially designed for police, security and paramilitary forces. Another surprise for IDEF visitors is our new generation turret and weapon systems. Although we have been designing turret systems since 1989, we focused on this area in recent years. With our own design turret and remotely controlled weapon systems we aim to present different and integrated solutions to our users and strength our position in global markets."

Otokar also displays the second prototype of ALTAY Turkish main battle tank. Regarding the project Mr. Gorguc said: "Altay project comprises two separate phases: 'design, prototype and qualification process and 'series production'. Otokar was selected as the prime contractor for the first phase, and the project was launched officially in January 2009. Phase 1 (Design, Prototype Production and Qualification) was to be completed in 78.5 months, and was divided into three sub-phases: Conceptual Design, during which Otokar assessed the current threats and combat requirements and the expectations and needs of the Turkish Armed Forces to develop an overall concept for Altay. We are currently approaching the end of the second phase; 'Detailed Design Phase', and will launch the 'Prototype Development and Qualification' phase very soon. Otokar is expected to produce four prototypes as part of the project. The first two pre-prototypes (MTR and FTR) were put through their paces at the end of last year. The MTR (Mobility Test Rig-Prototype) to be used for mobility tests has already made more than 3000 km. This prototype is also tested in cold climate conditions in March. At IDEF we are exhibiting the FTR (Firing Test Rig-Prototype) of ALTAY which has been tested since December. Initial results have met our expectations, and we are working to perfect Altay by analyzing the results in every detail and aspect. Phase 1, under the prime contractorship of Otokar, is scheduled for completion in 2015, when Altay will be ready for series production, which will be launched under a separate contract."
